Improving Boys' Education

I attended a seminar recently that addressed how to improve Boys' Education. It looked at 7 key areas; Behaviour Management, Positive Male Learning, Addressing Underachievement, Boys' Writing, Boys' Reading, Teaching Strategies, Teacher Leadership.

A lot of interesting ideas that were experimented with in Room 5, especially with addressing reluctant readers in Room 5. The boys in my class enjoyed stories about war, adventure and mystery. However there weren't many texts available at the lower reading ages. I get the boys together twice a week after lunch with a journal each and I read a story of interest while they track along with their own book. Even though these stories are well above their reading age, they are motivated to discuss and share ideas about the text because it is of interest.

This shared reading supplements the regular group reading rotation in the usual classroom programme.
